Chinese women's singles defending champion Chen Yufei and her men's counterpart Shi Yuqi both defeated their opponents on Thursday at the Indonesia Open in Jakarta to advance to the quarterfinals.
Fifth-seeded Chen knocked out Natsuki Nidaira of Japan in straight games 21-9, 21-14. She will face another Japanese shuttler, No. 3 seed Akane Yamaguchi in the last eight. Yamaguchi beat Sung Shuo-yun of Chinese Taipei 21-12, 21-17.
On the same day, Thailand's Pornpawee Chochuwong survived a marathon match against India's Sindhu Pusarla 20-22 21-10 21-18 after one hour and 18 minutes.

On the men's side, top-seeded Shi defeated Japan's Yushi Tanaka 21-14, 21-7 to reach the quarterfinals. He will next play Wang Zhengxing in an all-Chinese battle after Wang eliminated Rasmus Gemke of Denmark 21-19, 21-5.
Gemke's compatriot, No. 3 seed Anders Antonsen fought his way past home hope Alwi Farhan 21-16, 18-21, 21-14. Second-seeded Kunlavut Vitidsarn of Thailand eased past Lee Chia-hao of Chinese Taipei 21-10, 21-17.
Alex Lanier of France came back to defeat Loh Kean Yew 16-21, 21-14, 21-8 to make the last eight. Lee Cheuk Yiu of China's Hong Kong upset home No. 5 seed Jonatan Christie 12-21, 21-12, 21-10.
