Former U.S. President Joe Biden was diagnosed with an aggressive form of prostate cancer on May 16, his personal office said in a statement on May 18.

Characterized by a Gleason score of 9 (Grade Group 5), the cancer has metastasized to the bone, it said.

Earlier, Biden reported urinary symptoms, which led doctors to find a "small nodule" on his prostate.

"While this represents a more aggressive form of the disease, the cancer appears to be hormone-sensitive which allows for effective management," said the statement.

"The president and his family are reviewing treatment options with his physicians," it added.

Aged 82, Biden served as U.S. president from January 2021 to January 2025 as the oldest-serving president in the history of the United States.
