China's World No. 2 Wang Chuqin delivered a commanding performance, defeating Nandan Naresh of the USA in the men's singles first round at the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) World Table Tennis Championships Finals in Doha, Qatar, on Saturday night.

Wang controlled the match effortlessly, leaving his 18-year-old opponent with limited opportunities to mount challenges, en route to dominating the one-sided affair 11-6, 11-4, 11-2, 11-4.

A service call was successfully challenged when Wang asked for a video review of an offering that had been initially ruled as illegally angled.

"I have confidence in my serves," said Wang, who is seeking his first world title in men's singles competition in Doha.

Wang's fifth-ranked compatriot, Liang Jingkun, also advanced to the second round after beating Ham Yu Song from the DPRK in five games 14-12, 11-6, 10-12, 11-3, 11-8.

Xue Fei became the first Chinese player to be eliminated, as the only delegation's only member employing a penhold grip squandered a two-game lead, allowing Japan's Hiroto Shinozuka to battle back for a 9-11, 9-11, 13-11, 16-14, 14-12, 11-4 victory.

The world's most renowned penholder, sixth-ranked Felix Lebrun of France, eased past Slovakia's Lubomir Pistej in straight games 11-7, 11-5, 11-9, 11-8.

Earlier, top-ranked Chinese woman Sun Yingsha cruised past No. 216 Veronika Matiunina of Ukraine in straight games 11-5, 11-6, 11-5, 11-7.

"My performance is normal," said Sun, the defending world champion who has twice finished as runner-up at the Olympics. "I didn't know much about my opponent. But her serve is good, and her style is unique as an 18-year-old teenager."

Sun will next take on the winner between 262nd-ranked Lucia Zavaleta of Costa Rica and No. 67 Pyon Song Gyong from the DPRK, whose players are known for exceeding expectations.

"My second round opponent might be very strong. I will be preparing for a tough match," she said.

China's World No. 3 Chen Xingtong also reached the second round, beating South African Rochica Sonday in straight games 11-7, 11-4, 11-3, 11-1.
